What Would Happen If Earths Atmosphere Vanished
Have you ever wondered what would happen if Earth lost its atmosphere? Its believed that the planet is slowly losing its atmosphere, bit by bit, as it bleeds off into space. But what if Earth instantly lost its atmosphere, all at once? Just how bad would it be? Would people die? Would everything die? Could the planet recover? What Would Happen? Heres a breakdown of what could be expected: It would be silent. Sound requires a medium to transmit waves. You could feel vibrations from the ground, but you wouldnt hear anything.Birds and planes would fall from the sky. Although we cant see air (except clouds), it has mass that supports flying objects. The sky would turn black. Its blue because of the atmosphere. You know those pictures taken from the Moon? The Earths sky would look like that. All unprotected plant and animal life on the Earths surface would die. We cant survive long in a vacuum, which is what wed have if the atmosphere suddenly vanished. It would be much like being spaced or shot out of an airlock, except the initial temperature would be higher. Eardrums would pop. Saliva would boil. But you wouldnt die instantly. If you held your breath, your lungs would pop, which would be the quickest (albeit most painful) death. If you exhaled, youd pass out in about 15 seconds and die in around three minutes. Even if you were handed an oxygen mask, you wouldnt be able to breathe. This is because your diaphragm uses the pressure difference between the air inside your lungs and outside your body to inhale.Lets say you have a pressure suit and air. Youd live, but youd get a massive sunburn on exposed skin because the Earths atmosphere is what filters solar radiation. Its hard to say how much trouble youd be in from this effect on the dark side of the planet, but being in direct sunlight would be severe. The rivers, lakes, and oceans would boil. Boiling occurs whenever vapor pressure of a liquid exceeds external pressure. In a vacuum, water readily boils, even if the temperature is warm. You can test this yourself.Although water would boil, the water vapor would not fully replenish the atmospheric pressure. An equilibrium point would be reached where there would be enough water vapor to prevent the oceans from boiling off. The remaining water would freeze.Eventually (long after surface life had died), solar radiation would break atmospheric water into o xygen, which would react with carbon on the Earth to form carbon dioxide. The air would still be too thin to breathe. The lack of atmosphere would chill the Earths surface. Were not talking absolute zero cold, but the temperature would drop below freezing. Water vapor from the oceans would act as a greenhouse gas, raising the temperature. Unfortunately, the increased temperature would allow more water to transition from the sea into the air, likely leading to a runaway greenhouse effect and making the planet more like Venus than Mars.Organisms that need air to breathe would die. Plants and land animals would die. Fish would die. Most aquatic organisms would die. However, some bacteria could survive, so losing the atmosphere wouldnt kill all life on Earth. Chemosynthetic bacteria wouldnt even notice the loss of atmosphere.Volcanoes and geothermal vents would continue to pump out carbon dioxide and other gases to add to the water. The most significant difference between the original an d new atmosphere would be the much lower abundance of nitrogen. Earth could replenish some nitrogen from meteor strikes, but most of it would be lost forever. Could Humans Survive? There are two ways human beings could survive losing the atmosphere: Build radiation-shielded domes on the Earths surface. The domes would need a pressurized atmosphere and would need to support plant life. We would need time to build biodomes, but the result would not be much different from trying to survive on another planet. Water would remain, so there would be a source of oxygen.Build a dome under the sea. The water could provide pressure and filter out some solar radiation. We wouldnt want to filter out all radiationà because wed probably want to grow plants (though maybe it would be possible to learn some tasty ways to prepare bacteria as food). Could It Happen? The Earths magnetic field protects the atmosphere from loss due to solar radiation. Possibly a massive coronal ejection, or solar storm, could burn off the atmosphere. A more likely scenario is atmospheric loss due to a massive meteor impact. Large impacts have occurred several times on the inner planets, including Earth. Gas molecules gain enough energy to escape the pull of gravity, but only a portion of the atmosphere is lost. Even if the atmosphere ignited, it would be only a chemical reaction changing one type of gas into another. Comforting, right?

Faults and Drawbacks in Online Media
Question: Describe the faults and drawbacks in online media, Prevalence and Psychology of social media and modification of wrong information to consumers? Answer: Introduction: The Internet meme is a concept, which spreads through Internet resources from person to person, specifically via social media. Richard Dawkins first introduced the word meme in 1976, in his book The Selfish Gene to describe how cultural information spreads over the internet. Internet memes are considered as a subset of the general concept of meme specifying the culture and societal environment on the internet. Dawkins introduced new internet meme in the year of 2013, altered by creativity and innovations, which was significantly different from the pre-internet concepts (Wei et al. 2013). This article deals with the definition of meme, drawbacks regarding the social media marketing, low costs of memes, meme-jacking, prevalence and psychology of social media by providing information to the average customers. Often, internet memes are confused with image macros and therefore miscited. The definition of meme: A meme consists of a set of cultural ideas or practices of one society that is transmitted over different societies through writing, gestures, rituals, festivals or other phenomena with a theme, which is mimicked (Shifman 2013). According to Dawkins, an internet meme is the hijacked idea of the original meme that mutated and evolved into a new direction Internet meme may take a form of image, video, websites, and hyperlink or hashtag, containing just a word or a phrase with misspelling done intentionally. Faults and drawbacks in online media: Internet memes are the juxtaposed images, videos or hyperlinks shared virally through online media and blogs (Ferrara et al. 2013). They are generally meant to be funny with satire and an important factor in the internet humor. Due to this duality within the quotes, at times, memes are misinterpreted. The funny or sarcastic feature is not taken lightly at times as it involves many important factors like famous people, cultural society and many more. Social media marketing is among the fastest reforming areas of marketing ever seen. The process and methods used for social media marketing have undergone a very long way. However, the biggest disadvantages of online media are, visible customer feedbacks which can negatively influence other customers, increasing business and personal resources for managing and controlling the social media campaigns, negative influence by the employees and scarce knowledge to take perfect step in the long-run for optimization of the marketing process. In a ddition, social media is one of the biggest search engines in the world that continues to change and evolve to offer the consumer with the best possible options. The strategies should not be permanent, as there always remains a prevalence of consumer preference and consumer choices. Therefore, market trends are to be monitored. Now, these marketing strategies at times get misguided due to the negative or ambiguous behavior. The more the campaign is monitored, the more will be the adaptability of the new changes and thereby targets will be met with the targeted social media channels. Memejacking: Evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins first introduced Meme in 1976, named from the Greek word minema that means imitation of something. Firstly, the meme was used to describe transmitting memories and cultural concepts of human from one dimension to many through online media. In recent times, memes are spreading from one person to another via online viral fashion, being available exclusively online. They can be of written word form, phrases to be spoken or images and videos. Now, in marketing strategies, the concept of using meme may seem difficult to create for advertising purpose. Therefore, the idea of memejacking also named as memevertising appeared. This concept contains five reasons for success in marketing tactics. Those reasons are- Former establishment of memes: As per the definition of memes, memes are always popular themselves. Therefore, by attaching any brand to the popular memes, the success is accelerated. As the memes are already ready, it does not need much effort to street those at its level best. Traffic drawing: Many of the marketing strategies try to drive traffic towards a particular website. Memes, whatever be the form of product or brand, get attached with the link and attract likes of many people within social media. Cultural aspect: Generally, cultural perspectives are of that type which likes to share more, associated with social media like Facebook, Twitter and so on. The meme is a better parameter for sharing. Designed for social media: social media is the most popular and important medium to share something and be noticed. Therefore, social media is the major tenant for memes. Easy to create: In marketing, content creation takes a major part. However, easy to create memes are considered as a crucial marketing strategy. Prevalence and Psychology of social media: There is a specific observation regarding digital technology that social media is creating additional stress to people using it. More information is available via social media that create distress and depression in human life. More possibilities of distractions are observed. Also, social pressure by disclosing personal information prevails. These social networks create adverse physical and psychological pressure due to vast use of social media. Studies say that a successful meme contains three key factors. Firstly, it is easy for copying. Secondly, multiple level appreciations for a meme are observed. Third and finally, a perfect successful meme must not be fake. According to studies and reports, women faces and experiences higher amount of stress and depression than men. In a survey in the United States, people were asked about using social networking sites. The frequency of using different social media was asked. The response includes- use of Facebook almost 71% of users, Twitter by 18%, Instagram by 17% and Linkedin by 22% (Guadagno et al. 2013). However, all these websites show various types of memes. Most importantly, Facebook consists of many groups and pages that show different memes. Psychological studies say that memes affect both positive and negatively. Regarding positive effect, the marketing strategies or promotions are considered. Companies promote with the help of those memes, as they are easy to create. Adverse effects are the dual meanings and funny perspectives of memes (Milner 2013). Generally, social media helps for promotion of new brands through these memes. Also, memes are often created casually for fun and entertainmen t purpose to share in the social networking sites. Providing information to average consumer: Memes are the most popular form of providing information shaped in a funny structure. Memes can take many forms, such as, photos and videos that contain imitation or pranks. Video memes contain dubbing over the actual video clip with funny and other meanings related to recent popular affairs and so on. Memes are often confused with image macros. These are slightly different from general image memes as they show any familiar picture with other funny quotes tagged. Now, consumers respond to new advertising strategies. It is true that whatever looks good and attractive gets attention (Kuhn et al. 2014). Thereby, memes create different information to the target sample of people. Now there comes the idea of targeted consumer. Memes are shared over online networks and social media. However, today, more than 60% of people in the world are well accustomed to computer, telecommunication, mobiles and social networking (Weng et al. 2013). In previous years, when the social networks were not web bed across the world, the only sources of communication were Newspaper, Television, Telephone, Telegram, and Letter. Therefore, after the explosion of new media concepts like Facebook, Twitter, etc., the entire world has become small where people are exposed to meet or get connected to people (Shifman 2013). Almost all the important information is spread through these social media helping the general people in the economy. Modification of wrong information to consumers: Although there are discussions regarding positive factors of memes, there are some adverse effects too. The negative factor involves providing wrong or false information to the consumers through advertising with memes. The study on memes is called memetics. However, the meme has been considered as a narrow concept. People without knowledge about it may think about its importance and will doubt its concept. But, in turn, memes themselves seem to consist of their own lives (Kamath et al. 2013). Whether they have proven to be relevant or not, these memes do replicate, and they own a dynamism which is generally absent in the other social marketing ideas. As they act as living entities with survival strategies for business houses, they sometime provide wrong or false information to the people. Therefore, modification strategies for confusing memes are to be taken. Wrong or false information can create great troubles by affecting mental stress factors (Wiggins and Bowers 2015). Therefore, though memes are very much accepted as well as used or created, there remain some difficulties regarding online memes, and it will prevail and probably increase day by day, as it does not have any authenticated source. The Post
Summary The post-colonial theory represents the tendency in the humanitarian sciences which has become urgent since the second half of the XX century. Its area of study encompasses the problems of the interaction between the colonizers and their colonies. It focuses on the social development of nations being under control of the large European empires.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The Post-Colonial Theory of the Large European Empires specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More After the proclamation of independence of many colonies, the scholars concentrated their attention on the issues of their societies and the hard way for their complete recovery from the foreign nations supremacy. Moreover, the post-colonial theory uncovers the esthetic outlook, ethic views and perception of the reality of the colonial societies in light of such problems as national identity, self-realization, independence, freedom and others. Refl ection Giglamesh: A Verse Narrative is the book published by Herbert Manson in 1971. The plot of the book is based on the ancient Babylonian legend telling about the king Giglamesh and his life struggle for friendship and the life values. Although the original story traces back to the ancient times, its interpretation by Manson allows relating it to the post-colonial theory. In particular, the main character of the story overcomes the fixed notions about the life values of his society and puts all his efforts to bring his best friend back to life. As regards William Shakespeareââ¬â¢s The Tempest, this work can also be characterized in light of post-colonial theory, though the play was written long before the theory formulation. We know from the plot of the play that Prospero, one of its main characters, settled in the uninhibited island and started, actually, to control it. However, there was one inhabitant called Caliban. Caliban struggled against Prospero as he thought that he captured the island. He even tried to overthrow Prospero and expel him from the island. Thing Fall Apart is the novel by Chinua Achebe, the outstanding Nigerian author. His work can be directly related to the post-colonial theory. Okonkwo, the main character of the novel, is the representative of the African ethnicity. Although the life of his nation had never been simple, the troubles had come when the colonizers arrived at their land.Advertising Looking for essay on social sciences? Let's see if we can help you! The conflict caused by the colonial intervention disrupted the traditional order in their community. Okonkwo becomes the victim of the colonialism. When the new government of his land initiated the court trial against him, he committed suicide. Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad is also devoted to the life of th e indigenous people under the rules and control of the colonial government. The plot of the novel is centered on the memories of the main character to the Central Africa. The main character narrates about the mood and environment in the visited community. The social tension and distress is felt all over the village. The artificial spreading of the cultural norms and traditions which are extraneous to the aborigines makes harm to their life. Analysis Literature works contributed a lot to the development of the post-colonial theory. The art of word promoted the formulation and expression of the main ideas of the theory. The works of Herbert Manson and William Shakespeare represented the bright examples of the human relationships under certain social orders. These examples serve as a background for post-colonial ideas expression. It can be stated that the literature has become the mediator for the post-colonial theory. For instance, the moral of Giglamesh: A Verse Narrative touches upo n the problem of change in the realization of the highest life values as distinct from the social order and the format of relationships in the society. In The Tempest, several episodes also relate to the post-colonial theory and make us think about the issues of social alienation and its consequences. In particular, the alienation of Prospero and its proscription from Milano are closely interconnected with his own authoritativeness in the island and the alienation of Caliban as well. Probably, these episodes reflect the idea that the social alienation and expatriation of certain people give rise to the banishment of others. The social alienation is not only the problem of the outcasts because very often the roots of this problem are in the whole society which banished them. The unethical behavior of certain groups leads to the social fall of others.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The Post-Colonial Theory of the Large European Empires specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Unfortunately, not all of them are able to recover their feet. Many deviate from the ethical norms to which they adhered earlier and begin to be led by example of those who banished them. However, these ideas became obvious in the post-colonial theory in the subsequent centuries. From the Shakespeareââ¬â¢s work, we can only find the social themes which will be explained at the time of the epoch of colonialism fall. In Thing Fall Apart, Chinua Achebe shows the harmful influence of the external interference on the life of people. The relationships between the colonizers and the local people are the main theme of his novel. The use of force caused the social disorder in the community. The social protests and mutinies had been scotched hard. The author gives us the occasion to think about whether such measures justify the proclaimed well-being and cultural development which the colonizers are believed to bring in the colonies. Thing Fall Apart can be described as the bright object of the post-colonial theory study. It is interesting to note that the novel has been prohibited in Malaysia due to its keen critique of the colonialism. As regards Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, the plot of the novel clearly uncovers the dark side of the colonial interference. In addition, the novel is enriched with the literature art techniques making the readers involved in the colonial environment. While reading the novel, we are obtaining the vision of the way of life in the colony. Moreover, the author tries to make us feel the hard atmosphere in the village. The emotional element of the novelââ¬â¢s plot characterizes it as the perfect source of gaining the understanding of what it likes to live under the strict control of others. In Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad put the important message to the public. In particular, he tells us that the force and compulsion can hardly be the tools of achieving prosperity. Altho ugh the activity of the colonizers accelerated the technological and educational development in the colonies, the moral trauma which their activity caused to the local people overwhelmed the benefits. I support the idea that the real benefits of the social progress can be gained only if it is based on freedom and ethical principles. That is why we can say that the literature serves as a mediator for the post-colonial theory as it helps to inform the public about its main ideas and moral. Besides, it gives the ideas for further discussions.Advertising Looking for essay on social sciences? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Recommendation However, the analyzed works of Herbert Manson and William Shakespeare are not the representatives of the post-colonial theory as a whole. Only some of its pieces can be referred to the formulation of the theory ideas. The other parts do not directly relate to them. Rather, they are the results of the literature tendencies in the times of their writing. For example, the presence of spirit as the character of the play characterizes The Temple as the bright example of the literature style of the play writers of the XVI-XVII centuries. The themes of love and marriage are also independent from the main ideas of the post-colonial theory. They rather uncover the fundamental ethical and moral values of people and do not directly relate to the conflict between the colonizer and the colony which is the primary object of interest in the post-colonial theory. In the work of Herbert Manson we only find the ideas of the post-colonial theory in the struggle of Giglamesh for the life of his best friend. However, we can barely state that the legend as a whole relates to the postulates of the theory. Overall, only several pieces of the Manson and Shakespeareââ¬â¢s works are useful in the context of the post-colonial theory study. The novels of Chinua Achebe and Joseph Conrad are the bright examples of the post-colonial field of study. They have been, undoubtedly, useful for the purposes of the research. The themes of both novels are relevant for the analysis of the post-colonial theory and its connections with literature.
